Of course, methods employed during a physical game of poker, like tricking, will be irrelevant in Video Poker.

The game of Electronic Poker begins when the bettor puts credits (either tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and pushes the play button. A hand of five cards will then be "dealt" on the screen.

The Video Poker game also has buttons with ‘hold’ written on them, and gamblers will need to now pick which cards to keep and which to throw away. For the cards the bettor would like to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons should be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they wish, from all to none.

After the enthusiast has chosen which cards she wishes to keep, the player will then press ‘deal’, at which point any new cards are given out if desired. The hand is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it is the same as any of the winning hands shown on the pay out schedule.

Typically, the lowest winning hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money getting larger for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It goes without saying that the pay out schedule can change from machine to machine, so that skillful bettors are agile enough to choose the most money-making ones every time.

Once the first round has played out, the player can either choose to continue on in an attempt to maximize their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any credits that they may have won. Further, several versions of the game allow the bettor a chance to double their winnings, in which case a further round is played. There are also differences among specific machines, with some decks of cards including wild cards and other varying characteristics to enhance playability.
